CD Projekt RED members also chime in on the characters inclusion process
Bandai Namco surprised few people with the announcement that Geralt of Rivia would be joining Soul Calibur 6 as the game’s first guest character after previous leaks and how well he seems to mesh with the game’s world.
Geralt joins the likes of Ezio, Kratos, Spawn and multiple Star Wars characters as Western guests in this Japanese-developed weapon-based fighting game. He uses his trademark swords in battle along with magical spells to keep him inline with his Witcher playstyle as much as possible.
In the latest publication of the Official Xbox Magazine (via Wccftech), Soul Calibur 6 producer Motohiro Okubo and members of CD Projekt RED discuss Geralt, how he came to join the fighting game and the work they have put in to make the character fit into Soul Calibur while staying true to himself.
“We have not felt pressure, but more so a sense of mission,” said Okubo, via Official Xbox Magazine and Wccftech. “There are many fans of Witcher and it’s the best game featuring a Middle Age-style world. It’s just natural for gamers to think ‘I’d like Geralt to fight in a weapon action game.’ We have to meet their expectation.”
Marcin Momot, the Community Coordinator at CD Projekt, states that they were approached by Bandai Namco after working together on previous games in the Witcher series and feels it’s something their team can contribute to and feel passion for.
“It’s not copy-pasting something from one game to the other. Timings, perspectives, responsiveness – these work very differently in a fighting game and in an open world RPG.” – Sebastian Kalemba, CDPR Animation Director
“As a fan myself, and someone who’s involved with The Witcher games, I always thought Geralt would be an awesome addition to Soulcalibur’s fighter roster,” said Momot. “it was a great opportunity for folks on the team to contribute to something they’re passionate about.”
Animation Director at CDPR, Sebastian Kalemba, discusses the need to go back to the drawing board to break down and figure out what makes Geralt himself in The Witcher 3 and how that should translate from an RPG to a fighting game.
Borys Pugacz Muraszkiewicz, the Lead Writer on Witcher 3, voices his excitement of seeing Geralt fit so well into the world of Soul Calibur and deciding on his dialogue to match the character and add to the lore of the White Wolf.
Soul Calibur 6 is set to launch sometime in 2018 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox one and PC.
