When you think of Japan, images of snow monkeys, Mount Fuji and the neon glow of Tokyo will likely come to mind, not a sandy beaches and coral reefs. But according to TripAdvisor, the island of Ishigaki in Okinawa, Japan, is the most trending travel spot for 2018.
Each year TripAdvisor selects the top 44 destinations around the world based on the amount of positive reviews the destination receives by travellers.
The review ratings are collected from accommodation, restaurants and activities, and includes search and booking interest, too.

“These award-winning places that are growing in popularity provide ample inspiration for Aussies looking for great value on their next getaway,” said TripAdvisor spokesperson Janice Lee Fang.
“The 10 destinations were selected for their overwhelmingly positive feedback from the TripAdvisor community who love what each destination has to offer – be it places to stay, eat and things to do for every budget.”
The island may not be Japan’s most popular travel destination, but it’s certainly growing. Here are a few things you may not have known about this sub-tropical island.
1 The world Ishigaki in Japanese means ‘Stone Wall’.
2 It’s thought that name comes from the walls that line many of the streets on the island.
3 The oldest wooden building in Okinawa can be found on Ishigaki. It’s called Torinji Temple and was built in 1614.
4 A bridge connects the Ishigaki to a manmade island affectionately known as Cat Island. As the name suggests, there are many felines living here.
5 Approximately 50,000 people call the island home.
